Stand for Something of Fall for Anything
Pearland Creative has taken on a fun side project. No clients here, just a creative and technical project. The website game was born out of Creative Director, Nicholas Smith’s graduate studies at Pepperdine in Learning Technologies where he has research and crafted his loved for design thinking and learning theory. In an off hand conversation about the way people learn and ways for us to stay sharp creatively this idea was born.
Stand for Nothing (SFN) is a simple global online game that allows users to stretch their creativity by creating clever solutions for acronyms without a purpose. New acronyms are provided daily and users are encouraged to submit suggestions for what it means. Themes are given for advanced users making submissions more challenging. Points are tracked and likes are given but there is no winner or loser. The game’s purpose is to provide a creative outlet and a laugh or two.
The early prototype was a shared Google document between Smith and friends where they would write a new acronym daily. During breaks throughout the day the friends would add their contributions and laugh at the ones left behind. The anonymity made this version a bit more adult rated than the public version but lead to tears of laughter.
Smith began coding the site at the beginning of 2017 and went live with a beta version shortly after. The site was a hit instantly but lost vigor because of Smith’s inability to maintain the site. Smith has since found workarounds for the issues the site has faced and changed the challenges from daily to weekly to accommodate his work life. The site and game are still a work in progress. There is a great deal with branding to be done. We just launched social media efforts to create alternate domains for the game to live – more on that in the next blog.
You are probably thinking, why am I reading this if it is not done. We’re glad you asked, because the simple answer is that all about the process! We would like to share our process with you every step of the way. Stay tuned for the next blog update about Stand for Nothin!
